Taking a Break from The Pill

Updated: Jun 17, 2022

Question:

I’m 31 years old and I’ve been on the pill for 10 years. Should I go off to give my body a break?

Answer:

Dear Emma:

If your health status has not changed since you started the pill, and you do not want to become pregnant at this time, there is no need to go off the pill to give your body a break. Most healthy non-smoking individuals can continue use of the pill until menopause. In fact, data show that the longer a person takes the pill, the more protection she has from developing cancer of the ovaries or lining of the uterus. If you have developed any new medical conditions while on the pill, for example headaches, a healthcare practitioner should evaluate you to determine whether it is appropriate for you to continue use.
